A pIcture is worth a thousand words

My sister says I never stop working.

That's not entirely true.

It is true that even though there were no cherry blossoms on our recent trip to DC, the experience gave me plenty of classroom ideas.

A couple of the photos I captured  between the gusts and the raindrops will be perfect to use with my American Lit classes.  I can use the snaps from Mount Vernon to introduce our colonial unit, the images of the Lincoln Memorial before reading Civil War speeches or letters, and even one with the little girl who posed next to Martin Luther King at Madame Tussaud's when my students read about civil rights.

Images always help students connect to topics.

They especially help students develop their writing by describing what is on the page, instead of only what is in their heads.

Check out your camera.  What photos do you have that can inspire your students?

Visit my TPT store called Second Classroom on the Left for a free download of six photos of roads, paths and steps with writing prompts.  They are perfect to use as anchor activities, to introduce a writing unit about setting, or in Writing Workshop.
